Learn About K-81

LEARN ABOUT K-81 TOOL

  • Κ-81 is an invaluable tool in the hands of both the professional and the amateur. By adding Κ-81, we can achieve a uniform dispersion of our ingredients, making the final product finer-grained, uniform, stable and easy to use.
  • K-81 dries quickly without forming a film on the surface and forms breathing pores, which make it ideal for multiple applications.
  • It is immediately absorbed and adheres to bisque, raw, wet and glazed surfaces.
  • When layering different materials, i.e. of other color or composition, with the addition of K-81, the layer being applied will not smear or distort the underlying layers.
  • K-81 is a natural material, it burns out at approximately 250 degrees, before the pores of the glaze or clay close, so that it does not create any problems during firing.
  • Glazes, engobes and clay slips etc. with added K-81 will not deteriorate easily or form mold and will remain usable for long periods of time.
  • IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT Κ-81 DOES NOT CONTAIN CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose).

Dosage

HOW TO USE THE PRODUCT CORRECTLY

Even a very small percentage, in the order of 5% is enough to make the difference. The percentage could reach even higher without creating any issues, 10% or 15%, depending on the outcome we wish to achieve.
We mix our ingredients with the amount of water we apply so far. If our ingredients need soaking-feeding for some hours, follow the same. After making the recipe in the specific gravity you want, add the Κ-81 and stir until the mixture is homogenized.

A typical recipe is:

  • 100gr Glaze powder-stain
  • 130gr Water
  • 8-13gr K-81 (3,5% to 6% approximetaly)
